The Santee Cooper Reservoir System consists of Lakes Marion and Moultrie along with two canals and locks which can deliver a boater from Columbia, South Carolina to Charleston in a day. Combined, the two lakes alone comprise 174,000 acres with 6.5 million gallons of water to create an outdoor paradise. More than 450 miles of shoreline are home to lakefront communities and a diverse selection of wildlife. In addition to the legendary species of striped bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, largemouth bass and other game fish that inhabit the lakes, the lake shores also teem with wildlife. Deer, fox, squirrel, dove, turkey and duck share this beautiful area with the majestic bald eagle, osprey and alligator.

In addition to angling, various water sports are another popular recreation in the Lake Marion area. Wake boarding, water skiing, sailing and jet skiing are all options for water lovers. But there are also plenty of on-land opportunities. Exploring Santee state park, which fronts Lake Marion, is very popular with families.
